Second part is here! We continue our conversation with Dan and Adam regarding organic certification. On this episode, we touch on common misconceptions surrounding organic certification, transitional organic, and a final rundown on the certification process!

Common misconceptions

Common consumer misconceptions → some people believe there are NO pesticides in organic operations. However, naturally derived products are allowed, but no synthetic pesticides permitted.

Compost → it is hard to verify the source of the compost used on the operation because it is hard to review the inputs to approve them. Never assumer your certifier is going to accept all compost.

OMRI products → there are multiple inputs that are acceptable for organic agriculture use, not only products with the OMRI sticker.

If you have questions regarding inputs, contact your certifier to see if you are complying with regulations. You can also visit USDA National List on Allowed and Prohibited Substances in Organic Agriculture.

Dan touches on how organic farmers cannot have a synthetic fertilizer schedule as other farmers do. In his opinion, this is one of the reasons organic products are market at a higher price point.

Transitional Organic

This step occurs when the operation does not meet the 3-year rule land requirement, but the operation its intending to transition to organic standards. During the transitional time, your business operates as an organic a certified business would do until you complete the land rule and fully transition to organic. During this time, you are not allowed to use the certified organic label on your transitional products. Learn more about Transitional Organic from the Organic Trade Association.
