Slow Food organizations around the nation are hosting community potlucks Labor Day, Sept. 7 to raise awareness to the critical need for improvements to the Child Nutrition Act (CNA). CNA is up for reauthorization this fall, and Slow Food wants to send a clear message to Congress: change can’t wait. It's time to provide our children with REAL FOOD at school!
Restricted school budgets result in low quality, highly processed foods for our nation’s youth. One in four children are considered overweight or obese, and one in three will develop diabetes in their lifetime. The National School Lunch Program can do better. With increased funding, 30 million children can be nourished with high quality food that keeps them healthy and happy. Schools could afford to source locally, supporting area farmers that provide fresh produce, while helping reduce fossil fuel consumption.
